Wish I were a kid again

Hi, guys !I am a 90’s kid, and most the 90’s kids out there will surely relate to this post after reading it.

A few days back my little tiny cousin asked me to give her my phone, I had a feeling that she wanted to play Candy crush or agent Dash which I suppose are her favourite games. But this was the biggest mistake probably I did.

I was wronged by her the other minute.I saw her holding my minion covered phone in her hand stretching her arms and trying to pout.

What the heck, I am 22 and still can’t pout properly, I must admit that her pout was freaking awesome.

I giggled slightly for I had no intention of disturbing her.Maa who was sitting right next to me) and I exchanged glances.Badly we wanted to burst into laughter but somehow controlled. I complained her about not letting me click photos from the old camera we had(I sound so old, oh whatever ย ).

Walking down the memory lane I realise how much the world has changed since then.I was 10ย  when my dad bought his first Nokia 1100 with an Escotel Sim(acquired by Idea now), while we were on our trip to Goa .Oh how pathetic I was in playing space odyssey and snakes ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

My sister and I used to click our pictures with the camera (only after seeking permission from mom a thousands of time) .How I wish we knew that there is this thing call mirror picture ,at least we could have been together in a frame.I remember how we used to jump to our neighbors terrace to get a different view just for the sake of photos.

There were no selfies, no poutย and real friendship. We were was too far from virtual reality.Evenings when we played kho kho, badminton, cricket, stapoo ,7stones.Those were the days.My little cousin surely knows how to pout, but she doesn’t know what 7stones is.

We knew the joy that a 2 rupee coin gave us, she finds her joy in a 10 rupee note. That’s the irony of life.I still don’t owe an IPAD, she has got her own.She knows that apple not only is a fruit but also a Company, she can operate Whatsapp.I am so flabbergasted and feel so outdated looking at her.

The doll house game seems so banal to her(something for which I had even torn all my new clothes just to stitch a dress for my barbies). She plays barbie games too but on her IPAD.

A lot of things have changed.But-but-but yet nothing is changed

  • She goes for bicycling every day but alone,(unlike me who had a big bunch of munchkins .We used to call ourselves a”pack of wolves” &ย  literally roamed around from a street to another, small town perks I guess).

Nostalgic

  • She plays dollhouse but unlike mine, her barbie wears readymade clothes.I made use of all those SUPW lessons at school where I learnt to use a needle and thread.

ย Just like me she too has learnt ย “Aao Milo Sheelo Shallo, kaccha dhaga race lagalo” ( game which involves lots of clapping, sounds silly now but ย it was my favorite) ,loves eating candy floss(Budhia k Baal),chasing ย kulfi wale bhaiya, draping her mums dupatta and playing teacher teacher .Ruining all the walls of the house with colorful chalks.

No, the innocence isn’t lost.It has lessened though with time. After all, they are MTS Kids (Born in the generation of Internet). I agree to the fact that it is the need of the hour too.

We all have our time machines. Some take us back, they’re called memories. Some take us forward, they’re called dreams.

PS: I am not inclined towards the 90’s generation solely.I love all humans of all age
.References are taken by observing different kids I observe in my everyday life while traveling, strolling, running blah blah blah and of course my Lil cousin.

  2. This is a wonderful post. How many happy hours did we play the ‘fortune teller’ game on that Nostalgia picture as kids? The internet has changed a lot but some things stay the same, they may be a bit different but some thing never lose their colour xxxx

      • Of course I can. I was smiling at that picture.. Nostalgia… cos see we didn’t do the numbers there , we did colours then inside we did the numbers THEN we did the fortunes. Also sometimes when I have to think on my feet re entertaining kids, I did that paper fold up. The best bit? You could forget ipads. You also have another pic, two above , the wee girl playing what I know in the rest of the world was called Hopscotch but here in Scotland we called boxies. and boy was I a champ, so yeah I loved your post x

  6. I don’t think anyone 50 or younger would enjoy being a 50’s kid. We had boundaries and expectations and if there were any mental/social adjustments as diagnosed in70’s to present kids, well instead of meds the “meds” was getting hit with the giant wooden salad spoon until you “adjusted” (at least in Italian households). Thanks for your recent visit to my blog.

  7. Iโ€™ve been browsing online more than 4 hours today, yet I never
found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me.
In my opinion, if all website owners and bloggers made
good content as you did, the net will be much more useful
    than ever before.
